Social media offer a popular way to share thoughts and images with friends.

Yet, they are also open to abuse.

Values exposed on social media are often superficial and of little real value.

Facebook is the best known social network and offers users the possibility to communicate with friends and other people around the world.

Social media offer tools to exchange ideas, pictures, news, etc. with a larger number of friends at the same time.

Social media have played an important role in protests against injustice, as well as in supporting a wide range of initiatives in fields like politics, economics, Nature care, social and industrial relations.

Helping people to communicate more easily is one of the most positive aspects of social media.

Social media also offer the possibility to people with the wrong values or with values that are not very strong, to wrongly criticize, harass and abuse other people.

They can publish wrong and distorted information that causes harm or that ridicules their victims.

Quite regularly, the press reports on people committing suicide because they were the victim of libel, slander or other types of abuse on social media. These are extreme cases, but many other people – their number is growing – feel hurt or mistreated on Facebook and other social networks.

Wrongly criticizing, harassing or abusing people is most often due to the fact that those committing the abuse lack the right knowledge of the whole situation or have the wrong values.

Being mistreated or ridiculed on a social network can be very painful and harmful indeed.

Defending oneself against it, is not always easy. Reacting to harmful posts on the network, may cause those sending them to react even more negatively.

Defence and a better future

Social networks are said to be “the future”, but we wonder what kind of future. A future where social networks offer the possibility to easily spread wrong and distorted information or to easily breach the privacy of others?

Values is what it is all about. Stronger values on social networks and elsewhere are the best antidote to the negative excesses of social networks.

Please read on to learn how you can help to promote them.
